January Favourites 2018
Welcome to another year of my illustrated monthly favourites column! Last years series started a bit late and I missed a couple towards the end but I am determined not to miss a month in 2018.
January is no one’s favourite month. Christmas is over, everyone is skint and everything just feels that little bit less festive. That said, my January was filled with lots of exciting new experiences. I started my second semester at art school and traveled to Amsterdam with some of my classmates to soak up some culture. Here is a bit about all of my favourites from the first month of the year…
A sweatshirt with the word "Amsterdam" on it sounds like it should be incredibly tacky and unfashionable. However, me and my friend Rebecca managed to find one with a graphic twist and it is my new favourite jumper! I had forgotten how good the shops in Amsterdam in general were but also picked up totes, pins and prints too.
Jumble Wood by Helena Covell
The team at Flying Eye Books recently sent me a selection of their new releases and they have some very exciting things coming this year! My favourite from the bunch is Jumble Wood, a simple, playfully-illustrated story by Helena Covell which teaches children about the importance of friendship. Lots and lots of new book reviews are coming very soon.
I spent the last few days of January in Amsterdam with a group of my classmates from Art School. Activities ranged from visiting cheese museums and design galleries to going to the zoo, drinking with our tutor and constantly dodging cyclists. I have still to properly look at the many photos I took whilst I was there but if they are any good I might just do a little blog post on the trip.
Papergang Box No.23
I always love getting my monthly stationery fix from Ohh Deer's Papergang subscription service. There recent collaboration with botanical illustrator Jacqueline Colley was one of my favourite boxes ever. The new collection brings 2017's insanely popular tropical trend into the new year and I welcome it with open arms! You can read my full review here.
This Is Me
This month my favourite song is a bit of an odd one. It's a song from a musical I haven't actually seen yet. Keala Settle sings This Is Me in The Greatest Showman and it is a beast of tune even without any context. If the actual film is as good as this song then I am in for a real treat when I finally get round to seeing it.
Grace & Frankie
Grace and Frankie is one of those rare TV shows that doesn't seem to be getting any worse as the series go on. If you haven't heard about it, it follows 2 women - Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin - who's husbands leave them for each other. Apparently the next series will be it's last but I am hoping for a Brianna spin-off after it ends.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
I have only seen one movie in the cinema this year but I picked very well. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri tells the story of a mother seeking the truth after her daughter is murdered. The movie is powerful and dramatic and - more surprisingly - really funny at parts. The lead, Mildred Hayes, steals the show and understandably is now nominated for pretty much all the awards.
January is a classic month for planning new projects. With the whole year laid out in front of you, it is the perfect time to set out some goals. Whilst I have some fun blog projects lined up, my goals for 2018 are much more design based. I have left a couple of clues as to what is to come in the top image but for now I am keep tight lipped on the details. Watch this space!
